Phase friction welding of aluminum to steel for electrolytic aluminum anode guide rod

  • Traditional pre-baked anode aluminum electrolytic cell anode rod was made with explosion welded piece as the transitional connection. In this paper, phase friction welding was used to connect 130 mm×130 mm×2 420 mm aluminum guide bar and 165 mm×210 mm cast steel claw, replacing the method of using explosive welded piece, to realize automation production, save energy and reduce consumption. The parameters were optimized by matching friction time, rotational speed, advanced upsetting time and pressure. Tensile test, impact test, and microstructure analysis were conducted. The results show that solid microstructure in weld zone and heat-affected zone could be obtained with optimized parameters. And the resultant joints with optimal comprehensive mechanical properties could satisfy the requirements of industrial production.
