Effects of welding heat source parameters on residual stress and distortion in thin plate joint

  • The thermo-elastic-plastic finite element method(FEM) has been widely used to predict temperature field, residual stress distribution and deformation. However, how to choose the parameters of moving heat source model for given welding conditions heavily depends on a analyst's experience. It is necessary to clarify the influence of heat source parameters on residual stress and deformation. Therefore, an attempt was made to examine the influence of heat source parameters on residual stress and deformation in a thin plate joint using thermo-elastic-plastic FEM with Goldak heat source model in the current work. The simulation results show that the heat source parameters have no significant effect on residual stress, but have effect on welding deformation to some extent.
