Influence of different Transition Metals on Properties of Diffusion Bonding Joint of Ti Alloy to Stainless Steel

  • The experimental investigation of different transition metals was carried out in the diffusion bonding joints of Ti alloy (TC4) to stainless steel (1Cr18Mi9Ti). The microstructure of the joint analyzed with SEM and EPAM. Being an interlayer, pure Ni could effectively prevent the diffusions between Ti, Fe and C, but the intermetallic compound films were formed in the Ni-Ti interface, which decreased the highest strength of the joint to 380 MPa. When V+Cu was used as the interlayer, the intermetallic compounds and carbides were not found in the joint, while the thickness of the soft layer significantly influenced the property of the joint, and the highest strength of the joint could be up to 540 MPa.
